Most people don’t plan or think about what they’ll eat to help them stay in good health, therefore, they’re left to their emotions driving them to eat or the emotions of other people influencing how they’re to eat – whether those emotions are joy, love, anger, bitterness, fear, etc..
Most of us are what I call “emotionally charged”! We’re driven by our emotions. Living reactive instead of responsive.
I share an example….
You go out to lunch or dinner with someone and you say, “Okay, I’m going to be good and eat the healthy stuff because I’m trying to lose weight/be healthy….”, but as soon as you get to the food shop or eaterie it’s a different thing.
The person(s) you’re with naturally asks, “What are you having?”
“What are you going to eat?”
“Well, I’m going to have…”
And because it sounds good to your emotions….
Because you’re emotionally charged – controlled by your own set of emotions and you desire to connect with the other person, you abandon what you said about “being good and only eating the healthy stuff”, and you end up sacrificing and sabotaging your healthy intentions.
It’s got nothing to do with lack of willpower.
It’s about how incharge are you of your emotions?
This has happened to me on numerous occasions. Especially when I worked in jobs I hated or where I sacrificed my happiness by going out to places I didn’t really want to go. I went along to keep people happy as I desired emotional connection.
So, I was emotionally charged with fear, stress, resentfulness, anger, bitterness and hatred towards myself for not speaking up….for not speaking my truth…..and the only way I knew to deal with these emotions at the time was to suppress them with food.
It didn’t do me or the people I was out with any favours and I was miserable at the end of it all.
I didn’t know how to honour myself and speak my truth….but I do now.
As human beings it’s in our nature to desire to connect with one another on an emotional level, but there are healthier ways in which we can do that.
