People often seem to be stuck when it comes to burning excess body fat, so as to look slimmer, lean and toned. Some things have worked for them, but then they find their bodies revert back to storing fat.
Here’s my take on it based on what I’ve experienced….
Prior to my burnout, depression and during the time of having a sugar addiction I noticed that my body started to store fat in places I hadn’t noticed before. This was quite unusual for me, but it made sense based on what my body was going through at the time.
Prior to this I would eat what I wanted, exercised as and when, and never really took great care of my body.
I desired my body to be a FAT BURNING machine, but it seemed no matter what I ate or what exercise I did the fat stayed.
You see I had been use to training (exercising) for two hours each time, about three times a week. I got the ‘two hours’ thing from when I did Martial Arts and we trained for two hours at a time. My train of thought was…..the longer and harder I trained the more body fat I would burn…..hmmm….
During my period of burnout I was to learn this is not the case….
So, when I did eventually burnout at 40, my body plateaued….
Funny thing was, during my healing process my body started to release the fat…amazing!
These were the signs that my body was storing fat…
I had BACK FAT – small folds of fat on my back that didn’t go away, no matter what exercise I did.
I had BELLY FAT and FAT AROUND MY MIDDLE – yes, as small as I am, I had it!
My body fat percentage was in the mid 20s, which for my body composition was a little too high.
My clothes were feeling TIGHTER and uncomfortable.
I noticed CELLULITE appearing in places I’d never noticed before – arrgh!
Okay, so what to do?
I was exhausted from burnout and stress, and no matter how hard I PUSHED myself, nothing changed. Feeling depressed, I had lost my motivation to do anything.
As part of my healing process this is some of what I did and how my body started to burn fat instead of storing it.
I DEVELOPED A TRUST WITH MY BODY – I felt guilty for allowing myself to burnout and I wasn’t sure what my body was capable of doing. I got to re-learn about my body. How it got into a burnt out state in the first place, why I had the sugar addiction and depression, and really get to know my body type and WORK WITH IT rather than AGAINST IT.
TRANSFORM MY BELIEFS – I had some negative beliefs and stories running about how I saw my body. Instead of thinking and speaking negatively about it, I chose to love the body I had, be grateful for it and connect with the TRUTH of who I WAS and WAS BECOMING; respecting myself and my body. I was too much in my head and far removed from my body. I worked on MIND BODY CONNECTION, bringing the two together in harmony.
MANAGE STRESS & HORMONES – this was a major contribution to my burnout, but I also realised that the more active my stress hormones were the more my body was STORING FAT! So, it was a case of me focusing on well-being principles, getting rest, nurturing, not being so hard on myself and managing stress in healthy ways.
DETOXING – my body felt like a blob! I had no energy and everything was an effort. I decided to do a detox cleanse to help reset my body and clear out the toxins. I noticed after my first one a considerable difference in my ENERGY levels, the BRAIN FOG had lifted, I could think clearer, I felt happier and better in my body.
SLEEP – my adrenals were sensitive and my sleep pattern was all over the place. I got disciplined on my sleep and wake up times, and took naps as and when my body required them.
FOOD and EATING – what and how I was eating did me no favours, so I chose to totally change the way I ate, and HOW I ate. People tend to think it’s all about WHAT to eat. It’s not only that. It’s also important to consider HOW you eat. I eliminated foods such as wheat, gluten, soy, dairy, sugar (obviously because of the addiction) and some others, simply because they didn’t agree with me. I then found healthier alternatives that were alkaline and healing to my body.
EXERCISE – I drastically reduced the amount of time I exercised from two hours 3 or 4 times a week, down to 20 minutes three times a week. Wow! It felt like I wasn’t doing anything, but doing an exercise routine of H.I.I.T and weights helped with my hormones, as well as target my BELLY FAT.
Though I’m well and truly healed from the burnout, depression and sugar addiction, I still choose to employ the above.
For me, it was never about body fat. It was about healing and developing a healthier body. When I focused on getting HEALTHIER, FITTER AND STRONGER, it just so happened that the beautiful side effect of all I was doing was BURNING BODY FAT.
Having a FAT BURNING BODY can be done. It just depends on HOW you approach it.
