One of the common things people ask me when they feel tired, exhausted or “moody” is:
“What foods are good to eat for more energy?”
I remember studying alongside a woman who was in her late 40s, worked long hours during the week, had a busy family and social life, and confessed to me that when it came to the weekends she spent most of the time in bed.
Because she was totally exhausted. She took this state to be “normal”.
I was soon to realise this was not “normal” when years later I was unable to get out of bed and discovered I was burnt out.
I desperately wanted to just jump out of bed every morning with energy, which I had been able to do before, but now I felt paralysed.
How was I going to go from feeling immobile to having a “spring” in my step again?
From where I laid in my bed it seemed impossible, but I was determined to get back my energy and start feeling happy.
There were several steps I went through initially, but these are the main ones that stood out the most.
STEP ONE – Getting Truthful.
I got to realise that my depressed state and low moods were costing me vital ENERGY.
Using the Coaching skills I gained I got to work on my mindset.
The thoughts I was and was not thinking.
I got to locating how I had gotten into this “dark” place.
Accept my role in getting myself here – this was a big “pill” to swallow….and accept PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. I did this – the depression, the mood swings, the loss of energy, the burnout – to myself.
This is something I find most people find challenging to accept. They try to by-pass this and use external solutions to solve their problem, then wonder why they soon go back to feeling rubbish.
ACCEPTANCE and ADMITTING my role in this was my first step to recovery, and healing and then assess what was I realistically able to do with the little energy I had.
STEP TWO – There Is A Process.
I can only describe the process like “learning to walk” again – one step at a time.
Try one thing, fall down, get back up, try again and on, and on…
I wanted to accelerate and even by-pass the process, but I soon realised the first step was to RESET my energy from the inside and NOT from the outside, which is what I had previously done, but it didn’t last long.
I would cry, kick and scream out, and end up back at STEP ONE.
I got truthful again and after several times falling down, and getting back up, chose to surrender to the PROCESS.
STEP THREE – Energy and Moods Gets To Be Managed.
I had always assumed that energy was automatic. I took it for granted that each day I would just jump out, eat what I wanted, exercise hard, slept when I wanted to and I’d be okay.
Then I remembered the woman who told me she spent most of her weekend in bed because she was totally exhausted.
So, I got to re-learning how I REPLENISHED my energy.
I re-learnt about food and how to eat in a way that served me well. The foods that didn’t serve me and were creating havoc with my moods, body and energy.
I got to re-learn how I EXPENDED my energy. How I exercised, how I worked, how I expressed myself through my thoughts, feelings and time spent on relationships……some had to go because they were sucking my energy.
How I managed “stress” and infact understanding what “stress” truly is about. “Stress” only happens if you allow it (that’s for another post….).
I got to re-learn how I RESTORED my energy. Understand my bio-rhythms, my sleep pattern and a biggy here for me……learning to REST!
I use to find it challenging to rest. I would feel guilty and felt that I always had to be doing something.
I’m happy that REST is my best friend now.
So, that’s it.
As I woke up from my nap earlier it just felt good to share this.
I trust it’s helped you who are reading this and know you can absolutely have the level of energy you desire, and feeling happier with stable moods.
