Ever wonder why you fail at keeping your healthy eating plan going?
You set out to “eat healthy”, to “be good” and as soon as you smell baked bread…
As soon as you see someone eating cake….
As soon as you’re offered a biscuit or two….
As soon as you experience a “hard day” and feel you deserve a “treat”….
You end up sabotaging your healthy eating in favour of eating whatever takes your fancy – normally in the form of sweet, sugary foods or carbs.
I speak from experience as this was me not so long ago, but thankfully, being aware of my emotions and how the human mind works, I’ve broken through!
Whether we realise it or not we all have a pattern to how and what we eat.
This pattern originates from past and present experiences, and is stored in our minds.
Briefly, here’s the sciencey/biological bit….
Our minds are made up of two parts.
The Conscious Mind is where we make the effort to create and think things through. Where we learn a STEP BY STEP process. For example, learning how to drive, make a new meal, learn a new habit/language, etc… When we learn “new things”, this is the area of the mind that is stimulated to help us actively action the new thing we’re learning. The Conscious Mind is fully developed in humans from about age 6 or 7 years onwards.
The Subconscious Mind is where our thinking comes forth automatically, into action, based on the stimulus of our environment – the external things around us. It runs on “auto pilot”. Between the ages of 0-7 years the Subconscious Mind is like a sponge. It sucks up and stores any external stimulus that is introduced to it, normally through our senses. So, based on what we SEE around us, what we FEEL (touch), what we HEAR spoken to us or hear other people around us, what we TASTE in our mouths and what we SMELL through our noses, forms the basis of what actions we will or will not take in our lives.
For example, where you had to focus, concentrate and “think through” when learning to drive, make a new meal or learn a new habit/language, after spending time to repetitively do these activities, you can now “action” them without taking much mental effort to think about how you’re ACTUALLY doing them.
So, you find you can drive and have a conversation with someone in the car, and not focus too hard on driving a familiar route you do time and time again.
You find you can make a meal and talk with a friend on the phone, without much concentration as to how you’re putting that meal together.
You find you can speak that new language without stopping to think about how you form the verbs, nouns or pronounciations. The new language naturally rolls of your tongue.
It is said our Conscious Mind makes up 5% of our total mind/brain, whereas our Subconscious Mind makes up 95% of our total mind/brain.
During the ages of 0-7 years, anything that was TOLD to us or we HEARD, anything we ATE/TASTED, anything we SAW, anything we FELT/TOUCHED, anything we SMELT, we automatically took on as FACT. This then created our BEHAVIOURS/HABITS/ACTIONS and BELIEFS, and how we operate in life today. 95% of how we operate today is based on what has been stored and programmed in our Subconscious Mind since the age of 0, and this is where we spend a majority of our time operating and LIVING from.
Our actions, behaviours and beliefs originate from our Subconscious Mind.
How does this relate to how you’re eating today?
Maybe when you were younger you were TOLD if you eat up all your dinner you’ll then get to eat pudding. So, you did as you were told –ate up all your dinner and then you were REWARDED with pudding.
Today, you find you still live out that same action/belief/behaviour – you eat up all your dinner, so you can then have pudding after. The only thing is you now find it’s affecting your health and body in a way you don’t like.
Maybe when you were young you were TOLD eating certain foods will make you grow big and strong! Well, you continue to eat those same certain foods and they’re making you big….
Equally, you may have been TOLD eating certain foods were not good for you because they made you sick.
Maybe when you were young and you were upset or ill you were given some form of sweet food or any food treat you liked to help you FEEL better. So, now when you’re “ill” or “don’t feel well”, you help make yourself “better” with a food treat….
Because when you were young, age between 0-7 years, your mind/brain took on what was presented to it as FACT. Today, you find yourself still living out what you were TOLD. What you SAW, what you were TOLD/HEARD, what you SMELT and FELT created meanings, which then created “stories” that were and still are safely stored in your Subconscious Mind ready to act out as and when required.
We’re all familiar with setting new goals, New Year Resolutions, etc..
At some point maybe you become AWARE you need to do something about your eating, change eating habits, what you eat, etc… The AWARENESS occurs in your CONSCIOUS MIND. You consciously make a vow to start doing something about it.
So, with your Conscious Mind (using the 5% of your brain), you consciously start to take action on doing what you can to make the changes – saying affirmations, eating the healthy food, set a routine, using WILLPOWER, SELF CONTROL & DISCIPLINE, etc., to make your goal HAPPEN, but then sooner or later because we, as humans tend to operate mainly from what is stored in our Subconscious Mind (95% of our brain), you then find yourself drifting or falling away from what you consciously said you wanted; therefore failing at achieving your goal and acting out of “patterns” that don’t serve you.
So, what do you do?
Well, as is the case of most people because they’re operating from their Subconscious Mind, you can continue to struggle against the “patterns” that are causing you to sabotage and fail, using your Conscious Mind (only 5% of your brain) to do that, in the form of WILLPOWER, SELF CONTROL & DISCIPLINE…..
Or you get to make note of the “patterns”, actions and “beliefs” that keep re-occurring to stop you eating healthy, and make the shifts that will help you create better, healthier “patterns”, “beliefs”, and take the actions to eat healthy.
Maybe you can relate to what I’ve mentioned above or maybe you’ve found what I’ve shared a bit deep.
If you find you’re living out of a “pattern” where you start to eat healthy because that’s your goal or intention, but often you find it a struggle, you go back to “old eating habits” that are not helping you, you’re fed up trying and don’t know what to do, I invite you to start creating some better patterns, actions, and beliefs to help you.
